Today I received the proof copy of Karia’s Path, the second book that tells the story of The Day Magic Died.
That was way sooner than I expected it.
So now I need to go through it carefully over the weekend, and if it looks good, I’ll approve it Monday.
Wow, this means … it’s possible the book would be available for Kindle next week …

CHAPTER ONE
Dust sprayed into the air, shrouding the young man in a choking haze, when the large horse skidded to a stop. The man pulled the reins to the right, wheeling the horse in a tight circle as he vainly tried to scan the rocks around him. The dust was too thick to make out the weathered carvings. Turning was just stirring up more dust.
He cursed, pulling on the reins without realizing it. The horse reared, and surprise combined with the weight of the bulky pack on his back almost flung him to the ground. He wasn’t sure how he managed to stay in the saddle, but as the horse settled back he patted its neck.
“Steady, Nebok,” he said.
He silently cursed again, and sighed. He was impatient with worry, but there was nothing to do but wait until he could see clearly. He blinked his eyes and coughed. In a few moments it was clear enough that he could tell he had left the trail – again.
The House in the Old Wood (Book 1): One first edition left. I’m down to the last print copy of the first edition. It’s $10, and if you’re not in Central Florida and can’t pick it up, shipping is only $3 anywhere in the USA. And I’ll sign it. (Or not. Your choice.) Drop me a line if you want the last one. Update: The last one is spoken for. So unless someone backs out, you’re going to have to pick up the new and improved second edition, in print or for Kindle.
Karia’s Path (Book 2): Proof ordered. This is a major milestone. The files are all submitted and reviewed by Amazon, so the next step is for me to get and look over a “proof” copy of the book. So remember that big long list of things that needed to happen before Karia’s Path was released? We’ve completed five of eight. It’ll take a few days for the proof to reach me, and then a few more days to look it over, so this is perhaps the longest step. But it’s a milestone in the process, and keeps us on track for a release of at least the Kindle version this month.
This morning, I looked over the map for Karia’s Path, the second book in the series, The Day Magic Died. Once four or five minor changes are made, the map will be done, and that will set in place a cascade of events that will lead to Karia’s Path being available for sale in print and for Kindle.

Sounds like a lot, doesn’t it? But it should go quickly. The two longest parts are likely to be waiting to receive my printed proof, and waiting for Amazon to offer the print version. Altogether, I’m thinking two weeks.

“Karia” in contemporary Inamali
Syllabaries sound a bit like some kind of a treat, don’t they?
But they’re actually a way of writing a language. Sort of an alphabet for languages that are written syllable by syllable.
That’s how Inamali, one of the primary languages in the series, The Day Magic Died, is written. But I had no intention of ever writing anything using an Inamali syllabary. Then along came the map.
There’s a map that Karia finds in the first book, The House in the Old Wood, that has some writing on it that looks sort of like what she identifies as Old Inamali. You’ll find out in the second book, Karia’s Path, that this is written in another language altogether.
I asked the artist who drew the map for the first book to draw that map for the second book. She agreed to, but I needed to give her the words, written the way I wanted them written.
Oh.
I had no idea how the words were supposed to be written.

So this weekend I sat down and created three syllabaries: One for contemporary Inamali, one for Old Inamali and one for the other language.
I did that because the three languages are related, with Old Inamali serving as a sort of transition from the other language to contemporary Inamali.
I’ve included some examples here of what contemporary and Old Inamali look like.

The phrase is one you’ve encountered in the first book. You’ll find out what it means in the second book. And the completion of the syllabary, so the artist can draw the map that will accompany the book, is another step toward having the second book ready to be published.
